J. Lykins

Hello My Name Is...

Mr. Lykins

Welcome to music!

At Monterey, your children are busy singing, dancing, jamming, drumming, and playing many instruments throughout music and band class. We are fortunate to have access to high-quality instruments through the VH1 Save the Music Foundation and students in 4th and 5th grade have the opportunity to learn instruments in the woodwind, brass, and percussion families!

Additionally, 3rd grade students will be exposed to these band instruments, too, along with guitars, ukeleles, and recorders.

Don't worry about K-2, either. Kindergarten, first, and second grade students are learning how to read rhythms, clef notation, how to play hand drums and other percussion items, as well as learning some cool beats.

Exciting things are happening in music at Monterey! Keep an eye out for our monthly newsletter or check out this site occasionally with updates on rehearsals, special events, and performances. Feel free to contact me anytime with questions or concerns.

Monterey's TEAM theme this year is supported in music and band by encouraging one another to be accountable, responsible, and teachable all for the sake of having a successful team. Band, like football or softball, is a team sport in many ways. Unlike sports, though, there are no backups, replacements, or second strings. If one person is missing from a rehearsal or performance, the whole team suffers. We encourage all of our students to think of music and band as a team activity so we can be as successful as possible!

Here's to a GREAT school year!
